“A Whisper on the Wind” is one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It comes from a place in my life that I didn’t fully understand as a child—but have spent years learning how to feel and process as an adult.
I lost my mom when I was very young—around four and a half years old. At that age, you don’t fully grasp what loss means… you just feel the absence. In the song, I reference carrying Mrs. Beasley, my childhood doll, everywhere with me. She became a source of comfort during a time when I didn’t have the words to express grief.
Growing up, my connection to my mom came through photographs, imagination, and the stories I built in my heart. I never got to truly know her voice, her mannerisms, or what it felt like to be guided by her—but I’ve always felt her presence in a different way. That’s where the title comes from—“A Whisper on the Wind.” It represents those quiet, unexplainable moments where I feel like she’s still with me… encouraging me, loving me, and reminding me I’m not alone.
The chorus reflects that emotional balance—grief mixed with gratitude. I only had a short time with her, but somehow, it still feels like enough because of how deeply that love lives on in me.
The bridge is especially meaningful because it captures something I’ve struggled with my entire life—the inability to remember her voice or hear her say my name. But instead of leaving that space empty, I filled it with what I believe she would say to me today: “My girl, I’m proud of you—go chase your dreams.” That line is both imagined and deeply real to me.
This song isn’t just about loss—it’s about connection beyond time. It’s about how love doesn’t end, even when memories are incomplete. It’s about a little girl trying to understand where her mom went… and a woman finally finding peace in how she still shows up.
In the final lines, I return to that four-and-a-half-year-old version of myself—holding my mom’s hand, with Mrs. Beasley in the other. That moment represents healing. Not forgetting the pain—but finding comfort in it.
“A Whisper on the Wind” is my way of honoring her and giving a voice to anyone who has ever loved someone they didn’t get enough time with.
