Although his spoken communication was limited, he expressed love, humour, fear, frustration and joy through his facial expressions, movements and behaviour. His life profoundly shaped the Orton family and taught those closest to him to listen beyond words.
The origins of ‘Davey’s Story’ reach back to Simon’s teenage years, when he wrote a simple lullaby to help calm David during periods of distress and confusion. Unable to read or write music, Simon relied on his father, Peter, to transcribe and preserve the original melody. More than a decade ago, following David’s funeral, Simon rewrote the song to reflect his brother’s entire journey. At the heart of the release is an acknowledgement of Peter and Jenny, whose lives were defined by an unwavering commitment to their son. “Mum and Dad never stopped hoping, caring, praying, advocating and loving,” Simon said. “They carried responsibilities that few people fully understood, while continuing to give Davey dignity, security and a place of belonging.”
‘Davey’s Story’ recognises not only David’s struggles, but also his distinctive personality, laughter and treasured family memories. The song offers a message for families experiencing grief, disability and complex care: moving forward does not mean forgetting. It means learning to carry the person differently while finding a new normal.
Simon also pays tribute to his siblings, Leonie, Mary and Andrew, and to the many carers and support workers who helped David throughout his journey.
